While Chrollo organized a massacre against the Mafia as revenge for one of their deceased members, Machi speculated that he might ask the killer to join the group. ĭespite their close ties to one another, they will allow those who have killed their members to join. However, they were responsible for ruining the ideal partnership with the Mafia and are considered outliers even by the city’s standards. They are also a major asset in the defense of Meteor City, as shown when they defeated Zazan and her group of Chimera Ants. Among their crimes is the massacre of the Kurta Clan and the stealing of their Scarlet Eyes. After the leader revels in the group’s spoils, he sells everything. Īlthough they occasionally do philanthropic work, the Troupe mainly steals and kills. The group’s leader fills other vacancies, and members can offer nominations. Those wishing to join the group can do so by killing a current member, thereby replacing them. Each member has a numbered tattoo of a twelve-legged spider on their body. Biscuit was able to teach the strongest characters Nen and proved herself to be as strong, if not stronger, as the main characters of the series.Īnd there are women who break away from the love-interest stereotype, like Melody, who was there to be a friend to Kurapika when he lost control over his rage.Īlthough there are little of them, the women of HxH are all iconic characters who break the boundaries set by the Asian entertainment industry. The Phantom Troupe around the time of the Kurta Clan massacreĭuring their mission in Yorknew City, the group consisted of thirteen members, but it currently has only ten. Neon’s talent for Nen and unique fortune-telling ability was the core of the Nostrade Family’s domination over the mafia community. Girls like Neon and Biscuit work hard to either make themselves or other people happy, all while being recognized as idols to everyone within their industry. There are girls who hold extremely high ranks within the world of HxH. Their underlying loyalty to their teammates show how devoted they are to each other, despite being a gang of thieves and delinquents. On top of that, Chrollo Lucilfer, the leader of the Phantom Troupe, admitted how valuable Shizuku’s and Pakunoda’s abilities are to the troupe, and emphasized how they should be protected from mortal harm at all costs. Take the women of the Phantom Troupe for example, Machi, Shizuku, and Pakunoda all possess extreme power and exude fear on the battlefield. But, they are depicted as warriors, teachers, leaders, and even goddesses. They are never limited to be a love interest, side-kick, or support character. They all have their own goals and are very passionate in their fields of work. In fact, I think it was done to highlight the value and preciousness of a woman. However, based on those two’s, as well as every other female characters’, involvement in the plot, I believe the scarce number of women was done purposely. The first major female character who proved herself to be above Gon and Killua was Biscuit, who was introduced as late as episode 60. The first female character introduced, Mito, was met and gone in the first episode and only came back every few episodes. But, the series tend to show more male characters than females. They showcase characters of all ages, color, abilities, personalities, and purposes. I like to believe that HxH breaks boundaries and exceeds many expectations as shown through their creative setting, multi-dimensional characters, unique plots, and most specifically, their treatment towards female characters. They do everything that a typical shonen series will never dare to do, yet still stand beside the most saturated shonen series ever created. However, unlike classic series that follow the basic shonen formula of writing, HxH follows their own method of storytelling. Hunter x Hunter is one of the most well-known shonen series to date.
